Redefining First Class: Transforming Luxury Commercial Flights
Over the past decade, many airline industry analysts have predicted the demise of First Class as Business Class has become increasingly sophisticated, offering fully reclining (lie-flat) seats and access to exclusive lounges. However, today we are witnessing a spectacular comeback and a radical transformation of this segment. Companies such as Emirates, Singapore Airlines and, more recently, Lufthansa or Air France, are investing billions to transform the airplane cabin into a “flying hotel”.
1. Intimacy is the new standard of luxury The main transformation is no longer just about the comfort of the chair, but about total isolation. The new First Class configurations are designed as individual suites with floor-to-ceiling walls and sliding doors. We are no longer talking about a wide seat, but about an aerial “studio” where the passenger can sleep, work or dine without making eye contact with other passengers.
2. Technology and Personalization The latest generation aircraft (Boeing 777X or Airbus A350) allow the integration of technologies that were previously reserved for private aviation:
- Total control over temperature and humidity: Passengers can adjust their temperature and humidity in their own suite.
- Circadian lighting: Lighting systems that mimic the solar cycle to drastically reduce the effects of jet lag.
- Ultra-fast connectivity: Satellite Wi-Fi (like Starlink) that enables 4K streaming and uninterrupted video calls at 10,000 meters altitude.
3. “Fine Dining” Gastronomic Experience The service on board has evolved from a simple set menu to a “dine on demand” regime. First Class passengers can order dishes signed by Michelin-starred chefs at any time during the flight, served on fine china and silver cutlery, replicating the experience of a luxury restaurant on the ground.
4. Why is this segment coming back? Demand for First Class has exploded post-pandemic, fueled by a segment of travelers with very high incomes (UHNWI – Ultra High Net Worth Individuals) who want the safety and space of a private jet, but on long, transcontinental routes where large commercial jets offer superior stability and autonomy.
Emirates and its UAE partner Etihad Airways are the only airlines to offer shower spa facilities on board a fleet of more than 100 Airbus A380 aircraft. Both companies have recently refined their first-class services, improving “soft goods” products (linen, accessories) and dining programs, while optimizing support services.
Last summer, Emirates expanded its luxury footprint at the airport with the inauguration of a dedicated check-in area and an exclusive First Class lounge in Dubai. Opulence on board includes unlimited servings of caviar, luxury cosmetic kits (amenity kits) signed by the brand Bulgari and collection menus offered as souvenirs.

Meanwhile, Etihad has reaffirmed its commitment to the most extravagant space in commercial aviation: The Residence. This is the largest suite in the sky, featuring a private living room, separate bedroom and en-suite shower room, turning the upper deck of the aircraft into a true flying “pied-à-terre” (luxury second home). Passengers booked in the standard First Class cabin on the A380 can upgrade to The Residence, usually for a few thousand dollars more per person.
Etihad is also introducing first class to its two-suite Airbus A321LR fleet — a particularly bold move for a narrow-body aircraft. The airline plans to equip its entire fleet with a First Class section by 2030.
Even the Europeans do not let themselves be inferior.
Lufthansa has invested more than 2.5 billion euros in the Allegris concept, and the centerpiece is the suite that can accommodate two passengers.
- Suite Plus Concept: It is a private cabin with floor-to-ceiling walls and a fully closing door. The innovation lies in the fact that it is a double suite (for couples), with an extremely wide seat that turns into a generous double bed.
- Temperature regulation technology: Each seat has its own heating and cooling system, similar to those in luxury cars, allowing the passenger to set their ideal temperature for sleep.
- Audio-Video System: The 4K screen spans the entire width of the suite, and the sound system allows the connection of headphones via Bluetooth, eliminating inconvenient cables.

Air France “La Première”: The most exclusive European product
If Lufthansa relies on technology, Air France focuses on aesthetics and the “boutique hotel” concept.
- Velvet curtain: Unlike other operators who use plastic or metal sliding doors, Air France uses thick velvet curtains, offering a private boudoir feel and superior sound insulation.
- 1-2-1 configuration: The cabin has only 4 suites (on Boeing 777-300ER aircraft), which ensures a crew ratio of almost 1:1.
- Gastronomy and Wines: Air France collaborates with Anne-Sophie Pic (the only female chef in France with 3 Michelin stars) for the on-board menus. The wine and champagne selection is updated quarterly by world-renowned sommeliers.
